Our Customer Photostream – Down on the Farm

We always love to receive your photos of PuddleDucks gear in action. It’s great to see kids having fun outdoors – wrapped up warm and dry in their PuddleDucks waterproofs. We recently received this lovely photo from our customer, Margaret Mary Murphy from Co. Kilkenny of her son out and about with the cows wearing his  fleece-lined waterproof set.  She commented on Twitter “My four year old won’t go farming with out his #puddleducks gear… Thanks for keeping my washing down!”.

Thanks for the photo, Margaret Mary – we love it.

If you have a photo of your kids in their gear that you’d like to share, please send it to us at info@puddleducks.ie, add to our Facebook page or let us know on our Twitter stream.

PuddleDucks in the Press: Irish Times 13th February

Suzanne was interviewed and discussed PuddleDucks in an article in the Business Section of the Irish Times this week. A link to the article is here and the full text is below:

What is distinctive about your business?

We specialise in quality outdoor wear for children. Our products are completely waterproof but also soft and lightweight. Durability is also key. These practical clothes are made to last. Even after years of constant wear and washing, they keep on going.

What has been your major success to date?

Survival and organic growth. We set up the company in 2005 and even through the recession our sales and profits have continued to increase year on year. Increasingly, we are selling overseas. This has come about entirely through referrals and repeat business.

We now ship regularly to more than 15 countries and have a growing customer base in the US, Canada and Russia.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The one we are currently facing – taking PuddleDucks to its next level of growth. It is very difficult for an online retailer to really grow if they are only selling to the Irish market, so we want to build on our current export market and drastically increase it in several key areas.

What key piece of advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Believe in your products and love your customers. A large proportion of our sales are from repeats and referrals. We believe this is because we back up quality products with the highest level of customer service.

Who do you admire most in business and why?

Anita Roddick of The Body Shop. She started her first shop on a shoestring as a means of supporting her family but went on to have more than 1,000 shops in 40 countries.

She achieved this through customer loyalty and people wanting to be part of the “feel-good factor” created by the Body Shop at that time.

I also really admire her outlook on corporate responsibility. At a time when it was unheard of, she saw business in the wider context of a world that should respect animals, nature, people and employees.

What do you think the Government should be doing to stimulate the economy?

Boost consumer confidence by taking the uncertainty out of any future tax increases and spending cuts. Retailers depend on consumer confidence to maintain and increase sales.

The lead-up to the budget each year causes consumer anxiety about what’s going to be announced. This has a direct and negative impact on spending.

Also, there should be more support for Irish online retailers to sell at home and abroad which, after all, is an export business.

At the moment, 75 per cent of all online spending by Irish consumers goes outside the county. Government agencies should recognise this and help boost the home-based e-commerce sector to redress the balance.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in business?

In the first few years we sold directly from our website but also sold the kids’ waterproofs wholesale.

However, we soon found we were spending a lot of time processing wholesale orders for very little gain. Now we only sell direct to the public.

What’s your business worth and would you sell it?

To us it is invaluable and currently we would not sell, as there is so much potential for growth.

More PuddleDucks In Action Photos

We always love to receive photos of our gear in action being happily worn by kids in the the great outdoors. Here’s two gorgeous photos we’ve received recently.

The first is from from customer, Janice McKeller. Janice says ” I ordered this set for my grandson some weeks ago and it was given as a Christmas present, it is brilliant! It exceeds all expectations, it was given a real test at Culzean Country Park yesterday. I thought that you would like to see the photos”. Thanks Janice – the photos are fab.

The second photo is a snowy one of gorgeous little George McKenna on the slopes in France, snug and warm in his PuddleDucks gear. And mum Emer’s feedback on the fleece-lined set … “One word: awesome”. Adding “We’re so proud to show off our wee miracle boy in your wonderful clobber! Worth noting too is that under the suit are the Puddleducks long thermals which keep him completely toasty whilst rolling around in the snow (he’s not a walker yet but the kid can really roll!!).” Thanks so much Emer (and George!) – we love the photo and thanks so much for your feedback.

Press Release: Summer 2012 Positive for Irish Online Business

Here is the text of a Press Release we have sent out today about Summer 2012 being a good one for PuddleDucks:

Summer 2012 Positive for Irish Online Business.

Despite the wet weather, many Irish families have still enjoyed the great outdoors this summer.  Irish online retailer, PuddleDucks.ie has had a busy summer kitting out families with a combination of waterproofs and wetsuits.   Their sales have shown an increase of over 30% from last summer.

Cork-based PuddleDucks specialise in outdoor wear for children.  With so many families choosing to holiday in Ireland this year, along with the worst summer weather for 26 years1, they have been busy all summer with online orders from all corners of Ireland.

Suzanne Kingston, owner of PuddleDucks.ie commented   “Our customers were determined to make the most of the school holidays and not be put off by the weather.  Parents came to us to get wetsuits for warmer days at the beach and waterproofs for the rainy days, meaning their children were able to spend most of the summer outdoors. As they say in Sweden – where all of our waterproofs come from – there’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing!”

About PuddleDucks:
Founded in 2005 and based in Carrigaline, Co. Cork, PuddleDucks is Ireland’s leading online retailer of outdoor clothing for children. Their range includes Swedish designed rain dungarees, jackets and trousers for children, as well as waterproof clothing and work wear for adults. Their beach and sun wear range includes children’s wetsuits, UV protection gear and sunglasses.
