PuddleDuckers Out and About 9

The latest in the series of PuddleDuckers Out and About is really a PuddleDuckers In … and In Bed.

It was sent to us from Joanne Hession from Co. Kildare. It shows Joanne’s two year old daughter Megan ready for bed in her unusual bed time footwear. Megan loves her Strawberry Pink Smelly Wellies so much that she doesn’t want to take them off at all – not even at bedtime. This photo was taken by Megan’s sister and budding photographer Hannah aged six.

Many thanks Joanne, Megan and Hannah for the photo and story.

If any other parents would like to tell us their experiences of their children wearing their PuddleDucks please contact us at

Our own Summer Ideas campaign

When we started PuddleDucks a few years ago we thought that it would be a seasonal business. We’d be busy in the autumn, winter and spring and we’d be quiet during the summer months. For the first couple of years this turned out to be the case but last year was different. Due to the “bad summer” with its huge amount of rainfall we were very busy – with August 2008 our busiest month for sales ever. We felt a little guilty about this – as everyone was feeling glum about day after day of rain, here at PuddleDucks we had order after order coming in.  At least we felt we were helping our customers and their families to get out and about – whatever the weather.

A fine day during Summer 2008

A fine day during Summer 2008

So what will summer 2009 bring? Will it be a bad summer, like last year or will it be the good summer that everyone is hoping for this year?  Like everyone else we hope it’s a good summer – as we’re only human and we love the sunshine! But the business also needs sales during this period – so we’re planning on expanding the range to add “good summer” products.

But what new products will we add?  This is where we’d like your help. Can you think of any new summer clothes or summer items we should add to the PuddleDucks range? They would need to be fairly compatible with our current range and we should concentrate on kids stuff.

My ideas so far are for kids wetsuits and UV suits. Good idea or Bad idea? – please let us know. We’re well aware that these items can be found at your local Dunnes/Lidl at quite a low cost. There would need to be a good reason to purchase them from PuddleDucks such as better quality or a certain better known brand.

We’d love to hear your ideas on this. Are there any items that you have problems finding in Ireland or any items that you needed to buy online from abroad? We welcome all ideas – however wacky!

The best idea submitted will get a €50 PuddleDucks voucher. Please add your idea to the comments on this post. Thanks a lot.

PuddleDucks on

Inspired by an talk by Krishna De at a seminar last October, I set up a PuddleDucks page on the Irish photo-sharing website

The idea was that we could show off the lovely gift wrapping that Suzanne does for customers wishing to send our PuddleDucks waterproof gear as gifts to friends or family.

Suzanne takes great care and pride in the gift wrapping and I think the photos of them look good when collected together. Click here to see all our photos on

The gift wrapping service costs an extra €3 (gift wrap) or €5 (gift box) and can be selected as an option when ordering online. A complimentary card with the message of your choice is also included.

PuddleDuckers and the Whale

Here’s a photo from Cork’s Evening Echo showing the Walsh brothers on Courtmacsherry Beach to see the unfortunate fin whale who beached there a few weeks ago. Aidan, Michael and Alphie are all proudly wearing their PuddleDucks Waterproof Suits. It’s a great shot. Thanks to their mother, Amy for letting us know about it and to Rob for scanning it.

Splishing and Splashing in the Garden

5pm yesterday afternoon.  The rain had finally stopped but our front garden looked like a lake.  Jake just couldn’t help himself.  And when he found out we had a new product to try out there was no stopping him.  Our little PuddleDucker might be getting older but the lure of the puddles is still with him!

Warm Clothes for the Irish Winter

It cold out there – very cold. As I write this it is past noon but the frost is still on the grass – even though it’s nice and sunny out there. This is lovely weather to get out and about in the countryside with the kids. But it’s important to wrap up warm. So with that in mind here are my top 5 tips from the PuddleDucks children’s range to get out and about and keep warm this chilly winter:

1. Fleece-lined Set – Winter Red

Happy Wintering!

Looking back at 2008

It’s the time of year to look back at last year and to look forward to the new year. First a look back – 2008 was a very good year and a very busy year for PuddleDucks.

The high points:

  • We added loads of new products to the range – we now have over 80 items of waterproof and outdoor clothing for kids and for adults for sale on the site.
  • We got great coverage from releasing a Press Release about how well we did during the “typical Irish Summer”. This had a big positive impact on enquiries and on sales. And free too!
  • We had items made specifically for us for the first time – the new PuddleDucks fleece, the new School Coat and the large sizes of the High Viz jacket
  • We were very busy on the social networking front: We took the big leap into the blogosphere, started our Facebook fan page and joined Twitter. All very positive experiences and very good for the visibility and the engagement with PuddleDucks as a business and us as the people who run it. Through blogging and social networking – I’ve met many great people in the Irish startup and tech scene – open, interesting, enterprising and generous with their time.
  • And finally … our sales were well up on the 2007 numbers. September was our best month ever.

Overall a very good year. PuddleDucks is now 4 years old and we have great plans for more busyness in 2009. Coming soon!
